Reduce MosquitoesTips to Reduce Mosquitoes Around Your Home

Mosquitos are a real problem in the summer and early fall in Florida. It is important that you do what you can to keep the mosquito population down. Not only are mosquito bites an irritation for you and your family, but they also carry diseases that can affect the rest of your life. Here are some tips to reduce mosquitoes around your home.

Clean Gutters

Mosquitoes like areas that are moist or have standing water. If you don’t clean your gutters on a regular basis, they can hold moisture and water and attract mosquitoes. Cleaning your gutters is something you should be doing anyway that can make a big impact on the local mosquito population.

Eliminate Standing Water

You may have sources of standing water around your home and not even realize it. Scope your lawn and garden for sources of standing water such as buckets and other tools that you use around the house. If you don’t use them frequently, put them away. If they are used frequently, turn them upside down when not in use so that they can’t collect water. If you have standing water that you cannot eliminate, treat it with something similar to Mosquito Dunks larvicide.

Control Areas of Standing Water

You may have some areas of standing water that you do not want to eliminate, such as a birdbath or ornamental backyard pond. If you have a birdbath, make sure that you are changing the water at least once per week. If you have an ornamental pond, aerating it will help keep the mosquito population down. Any other sources of standing water should be treated with larvicide.
