June 11th, 2015

fleas Pests need food and water – both of which are in ready supply at your home. During the warmer summer months, pests are out in force, looking for sustenance and a place to get established. So unless you take the time to pest-proof your home, you’re in danger of receiving all manner of unwanted guests!

Don’t Roll Out the Red Carpet for Pests

It’s tempting to blame it on bad luck when your home is hit by a pest infestation. But it’s important to recognize that you’re making your property far more attractive to pests if you don’t take the time to maintain it properly.

By making pest prevention a part of your routine, you can help to keep pests at bay and save time and money in the long-run.

Keep the Bugs at Bay: Top Tips

1) Get out the lawn mower. If your outside areas are overgrown with trees and foliage, you’re at risk of infestation. Discourage pests by regularly mowing the lawn, trimming hedges and making sure that branches are kept away from roofs and exterior walls.

2) Clear out those gutters. A gutter full of leaves and water is the perfect breeding ground for a variety of pests. Ensure your gutters are clean and free of standing water – and clear out any damp, dirty corners in your yard.

3) Check for rotten wood.  Some pests, such as termites, are attracted to rotten wood. Reduce the risk of infestation by repairing or removing anything rotten, and move firewood as far away from your home as possible.

4) Manage your garbage. Smelly, unsealed garbage is a magnet for pests. Check your trash bin is in a good condition and regularly remove garbage from your kitchen.
